Welcome to SHM&IM

Increasingly, architectural substances will be shaped not only by their structures, but equally by their energy subsystems for more sustainable and integrated solution.” - Kiel Moe

Welcome to the Structural Hazard Mitigation & Intelligent Materials (SHM&IM) laboratory at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). Our mission is to advocate for the holistic design and sustainable construction of buildings and other built environments by synergistically considering their architectural forms, building materials, and energy subsystems as an integrated entirety. Our current research thrust areas include (1) methods for integrating structures and energetic subsystems and design processes; (2) emerging smart and low embodied-carbon materials and their infrastructural applications; and (3) data-informed structural condition assessments and monitoring. The group is led by civil engineering assistant professor, Dr. Hongyu Zhou.

Hongyu "Nick" Zhou, PhD

Hongyu Zhou is an Assistant Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). Dr. Zhou received his PhD in Civil Engineering from Arizona State University in 2013. He received bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Tongji University, China in 2010.  His research interests include infrastructure sustainability, structural multi-hazard mitigation, and the holistic design of structures and materials for their life-cycle performance. He is an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), American Concrete Insitute (ACI), and American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). Dr. Zhou is currently serving as the faculty advisor of the UAH ASCE Student Chapter.
